Oklahoma Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

The Oklahoma Department of Insurance requires that insurance continuing education (CE) credit hours be completed every two years.
All licensed resident producers and adjusters must complete:
- 24 total hours of continuing education (CE) (in each renewal period).
- 3 hours of ethics courses and 2 hours in legislative updates.
- Property licensees must take an approved earthquake course.
- Viatical settlement brokers should complete 4 total hours every renewal period:
- 3 hours in viatical training.
- 1 hour in ethics.
- Life insurance agents who also operate as viatical settlement brokers do not need to complete any additional continuing education (CE) credits.
Other important information to know:
- Licenses renew every two years on the agent's birth month.
- Up to 6 extra credit hours may count towards the next Oklahoma insurance license renewal period.
- Customer service representatives need to complete 13 continuing education (CE) hours (3 hours in ethics, and 2 hours in legislative updates) every renewal period.
A few exceptions do apply in the state of Oklahoma:
- Individual agents may petition the Oklahoma Director of Insurance for exemptions to the continuing education (CE) requirement, based upon individual extenuating circumstances such as prolonged sickness.
- Nonresident agents and limited-lines agents are exempt from Oklahoma insurance continuing education (CE) requirements.
Under federal law, all individuals must take the required long-term care (LTC) course before they can begin selling long-term care policies. There are no exceptions and this includes exempt individuals.
Time for your Oklahoma insurance license renewal? It's important to know the requirements:
- Every 2 years = 24 hours of continuing education (CE) required.
- 24 hours total = 3 hours in ethics, 2 hours in legislative updates.
- Property licensees renewing after January of 2015 must complete an approved earthquake course.
- Acceptable courses: online, textbook, or classroom.
- 70% course completion examination score is required to pass.
- Course completion exams are closed book and require a proctor.
- Up to 6 hours of CE credits can be forwarded to the next license renewal (all types carry over as general CE credit).
- Agents are not required to complete courses approved for line-specific credit.
- Courses cannot be repeated for credit within two years (completion dates must be at least two years apart).
After you pass the course, we will send your completion information to the Oklahoma Department of Insurance.
