License Renewal Requirements
In the state of Maine, 24 hours of CE must be completed every two years for insurance producers to hold a valid license. Courses can be taken in any subject, even those not relevant your line(s) of authority. Life and Health or Property and Casualty producers must take 3 hours of ethics every renewal period.
The Maine Bureau of Insurance does not allow:
- Extra credit hours to roll over into the next renewal period
- A course to be taken twice for credit within a single licensing term
Assignment of credit hours for review sessions or independent self-study is conditional upon successful completion, by the licensee, of the independent self-study course by a date prior to conducting the review session.
Maine only has two exemptions from CE requirements:
- Newly licensed producers who have not been licensed for a full year at the time of their first compliance period.
- Nonresident licensees.
Time for your Maine insurance license renewal? It's important to know the requirements:
- 24 hours of CE, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2 years.
- Agents may take any approved course for credit.
- Licensees born in even years renew in even years. Licensees born in odd years renew in odd years.
- Online, textbook, or classroom courses are acceptable.
- You must pass your course completion examination with a 70% or better.
- Course completion exams require a proctor.
- Excess credit hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal period.
- Courses cannot be repeated for credit in one renewal period.
After you pass our course, we will send your completion information on to the Maine Bureau of Insurance.
If you are licensed outside of Maine, the National Insurance Producer Registry can provide more information on the proper insurance license renewal process.
