Ohio Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

The Ohio Department of Insurance continuing education (CE) requirements are to be completed every two years. Within that time frame, all licenses resident producers must complete:
- 24 hours of continuing education (CE), including 3 hours of ethics courses to fulfill Ohio insurance license renewal requirements for Life, Life/Health, Property/Casualty, and Crop Hail producers.
Additional information for insurance agents:
- Up to 12 hours may be carried over as general credit to the next renewal period.
Nonresident insurance agents and limited-lines agents are exempt from Ohio insurance continuing education (CE) requirements. Additionally, agents with an extenuating circumstance, such as prolonged illness, may petition the Ohio Director of Insurance for an individualized exemption.
Federal law stipulates that all individuals (even those exempt) must take the required long-term care (LTC) course. Once completed, long-term care policies may be sold.
Your Ohio insurance license renewal relies upon you completing each of the requirements designated by the state. Remember the following:
- 24 hours of continuing education (CE) are required every 2 years.
- 3 of the 24 hours must be in ethics.
- Any courses approved for continuing education (CE) in Ohio may be taken for credit.
- Acceptable courses include online, textbook, or classroom offerings.
- Your course completion examination score must be a 70% or better to pass.
- Up to 12 hours may be carried over, as general credit, to the next renewal period.
- Courses cannot be repeated for credit twice in the same renewal period.
- Course completion exams are not open book.
CPMI will send your course completion information to the Ohio Department of Insurance after you pass.
