What does the term "Act of God" mean?
Act of God in Business - A violent or catastrophic event that is the direct result of the forces of nature and that could not be prevented by foresight or prudent preparation. In business, an act of god could potentially make the performance of a contractual duty impossible, and therefore justify the failure to perform that duty.
Act of God in Insurance - In insurance terms, an act of god is a natural occurrence that is outside the realm of human control or influence. Forces of nature that could consist of examples of acts of god include earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, or other natural disasters.
Act of God in Real Estate - In real estate, an act of god is a natural phenomena such as an earthquake or hurricane. It is possible that a contract could include a clause allowing a buyer or renter to default if the property were damaged by an act of god.
